Why are we making a quilt for Bruce Springsteen?
Widely admired for his advocacy for blue-collar workers, Bruce Springsteen is also a storyteller and a musical genius. This philanthropist bemoans the wealth disparity in our country, and he has great appreciation and respect for immigrants and migrant workers. In response to calling the POTUS a "threat to our democracy" during a recent concert, a barrage of personal insults followed from the President. Although he is dismayed with the state of our Nation, he maintains great hope for our future.
I am delighted to have partnered with the amazing Berene Campbell @HappySewLucky for this quilt! Berene designed the quilt, and it is based on a relatively little-known Springsteen song called We Are Alive. She chose this song because we think the chorus speaks to the times we are in perfectly:
And though our bodies lie alone here in the darkOur spirits riseTo carry the fire and light the sparkTo stand shoulder to shoulder and heart to heart"
The front of the quilt will be revealed soon. That is where we need excellent paper piecers, and I'll reach out to those who have volunteered soon. The reverse of the two-sided quilt features lots and lots of 3" (finished) traditionally pieced hearts, which we will sew together "heart to heart". If you make more then one heart, do not sew them together, and don't add sashing. It is very important to pre-wash your fabric! Please only use dark blue (no aqua, no turquoise, no purple...) for the background from your stash (solid, print, batik, tone on tone, all are OK as long as it "reads" dark blue). The heart should be made using 2 different reds from your stash (not pink or orange or green...) (again, solid, print, batik, tone on tone, all are ok as long as it "reads" red. Again, PREWASH, you know how reds are). The pattern everyone needs to use for these little hearts is this one by Diane Volk Harris, and with her permission, it Is free. Thank you Diane! Her pattern makes a little quilt with these hearts, but you'll just be making individual blocks for Bruce, with no sashing. Here is the link to the pattern: https://stashbandit.net/.../To-You-with-Love-free-quilt... (You might like to check out some of Diane's great patterns on her website! She calls herself the Stash Bandit.)Please let me know if you have questions, crank up some Springsteen music, and please make heart blocks! Tell your friends and invite them to join in! And thank you all.
